I am also tempted to just buy one from a second hand shop. Japanese and attention to parts quality - class A - I have tried getting in touch with them but didn't get a reply so I will try to go directly to their HK distributor when I get the time. If I were to take a chance on a SS amp I think would work well with AN - It would maybe be Accuphase. And the new AN Meishu Tonmeister is ridiculously good - it is the best 300B experience I have ever had - and I am not a 300B fan - with the newly designed power supply from their designer Darko - I was just gobsmacked by the bass control coming from a 300B which is usually a softer "lady-like" presentation. The Pureaudio One has my attention but at $10k is a lot. The Sugden A21a is just too expensive because of the OTO and I-Zero which both cost less and sound better. I can't really recommend a lot of SS amplifiers because I don't tend to like them. Indeed, the Puraudio is 100 watts class A - so I am willing to bet that it probably gets hotter than the OTO or I-Zero. And at these prices I'd go with these because the tubes used are very cheap and the amps do not get hot - EL84s just don't get that hot. With more affordable SS for me it gets more difficult because there is also Audio Note - the I-Zero is around $2,200 and the used OTO Phono SE at around $1,800-$2,300 depending whether it has a phono stage. But waiting to hear from the HK distributor. Nevertheless it shows potential and I am hoping to get one in for review. The SS amplifier I liked is called the Pureaudio One - but I did not audition it with the AN speakers. Like anything it depends on the quality of the Solid State amplifier. The sound is terrific in not an ideal set-up. Very easy to drive - only need 7 watts per channel and pretty flat impedance.

Other notes the speakers use Danish VIFA Drivers and are hand built in Austria in a Stream powered facility.

They have a tighter bass than the ported speakers and obviously a faster roll off. The K is different from other AN speakers - they are sealed acoustic Suspension infinite baffle speakers of 90dB sensitivity with usable bass to 36hz in room.

So some poplar burl finishes are more or less burly for example. The older model used rubber surrounds and the front and back panel was Russian Birch but an MDF wrap.Īll AN speakers are finished with unique woods so no sets are completely alike.

The differences from my old K/Spe and this newer K/Spe is that the new ones have dropped the inferior rubber surrounds for superior sounding foam surrounds and the cabinets are full no void 15 ply Russian Birch with a higher strand of silver wiring count. Which is kind of strange for a speaker that has been selling for a whopping 37 YEARS!! First as the Snell Type K, then as the Audio Innovations Type K and now as the Audio Note K. I have no place to put them but I always viewed the AN K and one of the most underrated speakers on earth. Well an old friend is making a return - I owned the Audio Note K/Spe back in 2003 for a short lived 6 months before trading up to Audio Note J/Spe speakers and living with those for the next 13 years.īut opportunity knocked and I was able to trade my KEF LS-50 and cash for a set of second hand AN K/Spe which should arrive to me Friday.
